10 million Brits celebrate summer 2012 by holidaying at home

Olympic-torch-event10.3 million Brits (21% of the adult population) plan to make the most of the summer (until the end of August) by taking at least one holiday or short break in the UK, with 8.9 million people (18%) planning to take that trip in England, according to VisitEngland’s Summer Trip Tracker. This is likely to generate some £2.3billion in tourism spend for the UK economy, around £1.9bn of which will be spent in England. These figures compare with 12% (5.9million) of Brits who plan to take abroad over the same period.

Just 11% of Brits book their holiday with high street agents

Just 11% of Brits will be visiting a travel agent in person to book their 2012 holiday, according to a report by TravelSupermarket.

When it comes to booking their main summer holiday, 31% will book through an online travel agent, 20% through an online tour operator and 15% through an online price comparison site.

UK holidaymakers leave it late

Domestic holidaymakers are booking later than ever to try to take advantage of last minute offers and good weather.

UK parks operator Hoseasons said since July 25, the start of the school holidays in England and Wales, bookings for the parks have risen by over 34% compared with sales in the same period last year.

VisitBritain throws £100m into rekindling US love affair with UK

On the day US President Barak Obama visits the UK, VisitBritain has revealed that Americans are falling out of love with the UK as a holiday destination.

Although the US was the UK's biggest overseas market  from 1998 to 2007, it has since slipped to third place behind France and Germany. At the height of the US love affair with the UK - in 2000 - 4.1m American's visited Britain; last year there were less than 2.7m visits to the UK by US citizens.
